Porto
Ercole,
la Rocca e
Forte
Filippo | Porto Ercole is a little port of the southern coast of Tuscany, famous for being
the spot where the great painter Caravaggio died in 1610.
It is placed in the middle of the Maremma, in one of the most suggestive
promontories of Italy: Monte Argentario.
That promontory is linked to the mainland by two narrow sand dunes, which form a
beautiful lagoon.
The Romans called the little port "Portus Herculis", but it appears that the place
owes its name to the Etruscans. All around the coast near Porto Ercole you can see
sandy beaches, pictoresques little bays, grottos accessible only from the sea and
crystal clear waters.
Porto Ercole is surrounded by the scented Mediterranean scrub, where in the less
accessible zone you can find some rare specimens of the dwarf palm.
Near the port there are also orchards, olivegroves and vineyards, which give an
excellent wine.
In the maintime the massive spanish fortifications give to the landscape its peerless
character and tell of ancient fights against the Pirate Barbarossa. |
