Caravaggio a Porto Ercole

Icona Danti
La Feniglia da
Forte Filippo

Caravaggio arrived at Porto Ercole in 1610, after a reckless life, in which he was a knight, a prisoner and a murderer. He was terribly sick and though the Company of Santa Croce took care of him, he died on July 18th, 1610 and was probably buried in the pilgrims' cemetery, called San Sebastiano.
Instead of that cemetery, today there is a little garden in San Sebastiano road where some scholars think there could be the tomb of the painter. They say it could be possible to recognize the corpse by means of the Cross of the Order of the knights of Malta, he was buried with.
